Shop-Built Tanks


Shop-built tanks are like the daily bread of steel fabrication companies. It is basically an above ground storage tank used to contain fertilizer, water, oil, a processing chemical, or some other liquid. The size of the tank is a very important factor to consider the type and usefulness of the tank. Shop-fabricated tanks usually range in size from a few thousand gallons up to between 30,000 and 50,000 gallons.  As the name defines, the tank is assembled in the tank manufacturer’s shop and then transported to the customer’s tank site.Not only this, the size limitations for shop-fabricated tanks are based on the size of equipment and shop space to handle the tank construction. 


Field-Erected Tanks


Field erected tanks got this name  because they are too large to be put together inside a shop facility and transported to the project site. 


Field erected storage tanks normally start from 50,000 gallons and range all the way to several million gallons.  It is so because these aboveground storage tanks are so large in size, all of the materials for the tank are transported to the tank site and assembled to create the storage tank


Shop-Built Tanks vs. Field-Erected Tanks


There are three primary differences between field-erected and shop-built tanks. These are: 


Cost. Field- Erected tanks are expensive while Shop-built tanks are generally the more affordable option.


Size. Size is an important difference. Among the two, shop-built tanks have limited transportation capacity while the field-erected tanks have no size limit.


Timeline. Tanks fabricated start-to-finish in the shop have a much more dependable deadline than field-erected tanks because the shop is a controlled environment, not susceptible to disturbances like the weather.
